Facebook has become humongous and is easily the largest network of people that has ever been acquired online, currently boasting around 850 million users. Even though no other platform has ever reached quite this scale, people sometimes forget just how many tech giants have come and gone over the last decade or two.
Century Link created this infographic looking at a few online empires that exploded in size and have since died away. Altavista is really the only company defined here who has completely vanished. AOL and Yahoo still run very active businesses, down from their peaks but certainly still hold significance. They may be on the way out, but they aren’t gone yet. Digg is much the same, having lost much of its audience to Reddit, still has a place in the aggregation and sharing online world. Facebook is top dog now, but will they still be in 10 years?
