At this point Romney has all but clinched the republican nomination for president. With Santorum the only remaining threat, and fast fading at that, Romney is likely shifting his focus towards the general election. But before he can attempt to defeat the incumbent he’ll need a running mate, and oh the choices he’ll have.
We’ve begun to see the ass kissing from other republican politicians already, ranging from giving official endorsements to simply speaking with the media about how great Romney is. Included are even some of those who competed fiercely against Romney, like Palin and Santorum, who have said that they would be listening if Romney was in need of a running mate.
The Washington Post provides this graphic of some of the possible choices Romney has. While this certainly doesn’t include all of his options, and candidates have surprised before, such as McCain’s selection of Palin in 2008, these are some of the more probable candidates. Ryan and Christie are generally the two highest profile and likable of the choices, but neither of them has expressed much interest in this election. Both were pushed to seek the GOP nomination by their party and both turned it down for the 2012 election, so it will be interesting to see who Romney decides to pick up.
