Walmart.com has a new feature today they call “Pay with Cash” that enables online shoppers to make their purchase and pay for it in a local store with cash. Targeting people who don’t have credit or debit cards, I suppose Walmart believes they are now enabling customers to make purchases they otherwise could not. President and CEO of Walmart.com Joel Anderson seems to think this will reach a whole new market.

“The fact that only 15 percent of our transactions are done in the form of credit at our stores means there’s a large percentage of Walmart customers who are dependent on cash to transact online. We definitely think it is a big opportunity,” he said.

Your payment must be made in a Walmart store within 48 hours, and your items will not ship until you do so.

That 85% of Walmart shoppers pay with cash or check is a huge statistic. Does Walmart offer much online that they don’t offer in the store? Will this really impact the purchasing behavior of the majority of their shoppers? Adding another payment option really can’t hurt, but I would be surprised if this is the game changer some believe it to be. Those without credit and debit cards are some of the least likely to be making online purchases.
