Back in 2007, when he was a player in the 2008 presidential election, Romney discussed how the porn industry, among other things, is ruining our nation. He states that when he becomes president, every new computer sold in the US will have an optional filter that can be enabled to block all pornography, and presumably other offence material.

The problem is of course that the internet doesn’t work that way. Even if you agree that pornography should be blocked, or believe that the option to block it should be provided, the internet is too large and complex to implement that sort of censorship. This is a pretty big empty promise.

But, even if all porn could magically be blocked, what comes next? Will violent or profane material be turned off? And when does the internet censoring change from optional to automatic? For hating China so much, it’s surprising to see republicans suggest ideas that move in that societal direction.
