The Institute for Supply Management reports that the ISM manufacturing index was mostly unchanged in August with a reading of 49.6, down 0.2 from July’s figure of 49.8. As always, a reading below 50 signifies contraction, but only marginal in this case.

No attempt to make good news of bad though, this is the lowest ISM manufacturing reading since July of 2009. While only a small decline, it is certainly a negative indicator of what’s to come.
